As the statewide enterprise looks to the future, information technology will
play an integral role in our ability to compete in the global economy, to
service our customers and, ultimately, to support economic development.
With this future direction in mind, the enterprise’s vision is a target
for the desired future state of Ohio. Like the enterprise’s mission, this
vision is fundamental to all enterprise initiatives. It is based on improved
availability and access to information, effective and efficient management
of data, delivery of value-added services to customers, and ongoing management
of information technology, making Ohio a safe place to live and work. The
vision for Ohio’s technology future – the foundation for the statewide enterprise
– is summarized in the following statement and elaborated in the subsequent
paragraphs.

In the enterprise vision, Ohio offers a diverse society that is a sought-after
place to reside, raise a family, and build a career.

New citizens to the State will feel welcomed because it is easy to deal with
all levels of government when establishing a household, registering a
vehicle, or enrolling the children in school. Many families come to Ohio
seeking new opportunities or better jobs.

Enabled by a renewed commitment to information technology, the State will be
recognized as a good place to start or run a business. The Ohio Business
Portal, already recognized as an effective one-stop shop for starting
a new business or expanding a successful one, receives a record number
of applications from entrepreneurs in high-tech and other fields.

A respected survey will show an increase in citizens’ belief that their state
government is continuing to head in the right direction. National surveys
will show Ohio ranks as one of the nation’s leaders in the effective use
of information technology for delivering government services. This success
is attributed to Ohio’s statewide enterprise approach and to the outstanding
performance of government agencies.

Ohio will truly become a community as state and local agencies collaborate to
make accessing government seamless. Public organizations will work together
to continually find new ways to provide the information people need to
conduct their business and go about their lives. They will be proactive
and work harmoniously with the state legislature to ensure that improvements
using technology are on the agenda.

State agencies will invest wisely in infrastructure to support vital human services
and employment programs, and to make services convenient. Ohio’s citizens
will applaud the efforts that have led to efficient statewide purchasing
of goods and services – state IT expenditures will have been reduced significantly
even as many more transactions are being processed.

Ohioans can rest assured knowing their tax dollars are well spent on education,
job creation, human services, and community protection from crime and
natural disaster.
